Burnout is not a bad month. It is a sustained mismatch between what a role is asking of a person and what a person actually has to give, and it does real, cumulative damage to concentration, mood, sleep, relationships, and the sense of self.

C-G Health provides therapy for burnout and chronic work stress across Maryland, most often for professionals, leaders, and first responders whose functioning is still intact enough that the exhaustion stays invisible from the outside.

What burnout actually looks like

The classic picture is a three-part collapse: exhaustion that no ordinary rest touches, a growing cynicism or distance from the work, and a quiet erosion of the sense that anything you do makes a real difference. The exhaustion tends to be the presenting concern. The other two are usually further along than a person realises.

Alongside those, most people arriving with burnout are also carrying a stretched cognitive picture (trouble concentrating, forgetting small things, decision fatigue at the end of the day) and a body that is not sleeping properly, is holding tension it cannot let go of, or has begun signalling in other ways.

How the work is structured

Early sessions look honestly at the current load: hours, responsibilities, the actual as-lived demands of the role, the recovery capacity you presently have, and the parts of your life that are subsidising the work at their own cost. That map matters: burnout is often solved at the level of load and boundaries, not only at the level of coping.

The therapeutic frame draws on CBT for the thought patterns that keep a person tolerating an unsustainable load, schema therapy for the earlier patterns (Unrelenting Standards, Self-Sacrifice, Approval-Seeking) that often sit underneath, and mindfulness-based work for the nervous system that has been running hot for years.

The identity work underneath

Burnout is often, at heart, an identity question that has caught up with a person. The work asks: whose life are you actually living, whose vision are you implementing, and what would it mean to author your own choices about capacity, ambition, and rest.

This is not a small conversation. It is the conversation that most often creates real, durable change, the kind that a longer holiday, a productivity system, or a new job will not on its own produce.

What tends to shift

Early on, the sleep and the acute stress response usually settle first. Then the cognitive load lightens. Then, over months, the harder work: adjusting the actual conditions of your working life so that recovery is structurally possible, not only aspirational.
