Gottman Method · Maryland telehealth
Research-based couples work that actually holds up.
Forty years of research on real couples has produced one of the most rigorous frameworks in the field. The Gottman Method is the backbone of couples work at C-G Health.
The Gottman Method was developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman based on decades of longitudinal research at the University of Washington: following real couples over years and identifying, with unusual precision, which relationship patterns predict thriving, drifting, and unraveling.
Couples work at C-G Health draws on that research base and translates it into practical, live-in-the-room work across Maryland through secure video, in English or French.
What the research actually found
Certain repeated behaviors (Gottman called them the Four Horsemen: criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling) predict relationship failure at very high accuracy. Contempt is the strongest single predictor and the one couples work has to interrupt first.
Equally, a set of concrete practices predicts thriving: turning toward small emotional bids, building a shared friendship system underneath the partnership, managing perpetual problems without trying to solve them, honoring each other's dreams, and repairing skillfully after inevitable ruptures.
These are not abstractions. They are observable behaviors that can be assessed, taught, and rehearsed.

The Gottman framework: the Sound Relationship House
The Gottman model organises the work into a 'Sound Relationship House': a set of levels that each support the ones above them. Building love maps (knowing your partner's inner world). Sharing fondness and admiration. Turning toward instead of away. Cultivating a positive perspective. Managing conflict. Making life dreams come true. Creating shared meaning. Trust and commitment as the walls holding the whole structure.
Couples work moves through the levels that need attention, not all of them, not always in order, depending on what the assessment shows.

What sessions actually look like
The first session is an extended intake with both partners. From there, sessions usually alternate between joint work and, occasionally, individual sessions with each partner to gather a clearer picture. The work is structured, active, and full of live rehearsal: trying a new way of raising a hard topic, right there in the room, and adjusting until it lands.
Sessions run 75 minutes rather than the standard 50. The longer session is not a luxury for couples work; it is what makes real repair possible in a single sitting.
Is this a fit?
An honest word about the work.
You'll likely get the most from this work if you are:
- Married and unmarried couples of every configuration across Maryland
- Couples wanting a structured, research-informed approach
- Couples ready to look honestly at their own contribution to the pattern
The work asks for:
- Both partners attending consistently
- Willingness to try new practices between sessions, not only in them
- Both partners physically in Maryland during each appointment
Active intimate-partner abuse is a contraindication for couples therapy of any kind. A referral to the appropriate specialist care can go out instead of scheduling.
