A lot of LGBTQ+ people arrive in therapy having already spent years explaining themselves, and expecting to spend the first several sessions doing it again. That teaching work is exhausting, and it is not what you are paying for.

Here, identity is taken as given. You are welcome to talk about it as much or as little as the actual problem requires.

What affirming means in practice

It means your identity and your relationships are not treated as the thing to be explained, questioned, or quietly worked around. It also means not assuming that every difficulty you bring is about being LGBTQ+, because frequently it is not.

Anxiety is anxiety, grief is grief, and a relationship stuck in the same argument is stuck for reasons that have nothing to do with orientation or gender.

When identity is the subject

Sometimes it is central: coming out at a particular age or in a particular family, managing a workplace where you are the only one, the ongoing calculation about who knows what.

Family rejection and conditional acceptance are common and heavy, and the grief attached to them is often never given a name.

Couples and relationships

Couples work covers same-sex and queer relationships on the same footing as any other, including couples at different stages of being out, and relationships that do not follow a conventional structure.

The clinical approach draws on the Gottman method and schema therapy, looking at both what happens between partners and what each brings from earlier in life.

The practical frame

All sessions are by secure video on a HIPAA-compliant platform, and you must be physically in Maryland at the time. Individual sessions are $180 for 53 to 60 minutes; couples are $280 for 75 minutes.

Enquiries are answered within 24 to 48 hours. In a crisis, call or text 988. Sessions are available in English or French.
