The system that keeps producing the same argument.

Considered family therapy for adult family systems across Maryland by video. Communication, roles, generational patterns, and the honest work of repair.

Family therapy at C-G Health is a working session held with more than one member of an adult family system: adult siblings, an adult child and a parent, a spouse and an in-law, a blended-family constellation. The frame treats the family as a system with its own patterns, roles, and history, rather than as a group of individuals talking past one another.

Sessions are conducted through secure video across Maryland, which makes it practical for family members whose lives and schedules would otherwise never overlap in one room.

What family sessions actually work on

The presenting concern is usually one of a small handful: a communication pattern that has ossified into conflict, a role assigned long ago that no longer fits, a rupture that needs repair, a family transition (a marriage, a death, an illness, a move, a caregiving arrangement) that has strained the whole system, or a decision the family cannot make together.

Underneath the presenting concern is almost always a generational pattern: an emotional template inherited from an earlier family that is still shaping how this one operates. Naming that pattern honestly, together, is one of the most useful things sessions can do.

How the work is structured

A first session gathers the concerns from each member of the family in turn, with real airtime and without the older interruptions and hierarchies immediately taking over. From there, the work is a mix of skill-building for the communication itself, structured conversation on the specific ruptures or decisions that need attention, and reflective work on the patterns underneath.

The frame draws on family-systems thinking, Gottman-informed skills for the couple sub-systems inside the family, schema therapy for the deep patterns each member is bringing, and psychodynamic depth for the meaning underneath the conflict.

Sessions are not a courtroom and not a debate. The therapist's role is to hold the room so that each member can actually be heard, and so that new conversations become possible.

What family therapy is not

The practice does not conduct court-ordered evaluations, custody assessments, or forensic work of any kind. Family therapy here is clinical, not evaluative.

Sessions do not require every member of the family to be present at every meeting. Individual or sub-group sessions inside the arc are common and often useful.

The longer arc

Family therapy at its best produces a system that argues better, repairs faster, and makes decisions with less collateral damage, not a family that never disagrees. What tends to change first is the tone of the conversations; what changes over months is the underlying pattern that had been generating them.

An honest word about the work.

You'll likely get the most from this work if you are:

  • Adult family systems across Maryland: parents and adult children, adult siblings, blended families
  • Families navigating illness, caregiving, a death, a marriage, or a major decision
  • Anyone ready to look at the pattern, not only the incident

The work asks for:

  • At least two members willing to attend the initial sessions in good faith
  • Openness to talking about the family's history, not only its present
  • Willingness to schedule around several people's calendars
