Relationship work sits at the centre of the practice at C-G Health. It's the concern people bring most often, and it's the one where careful, structured attention makes the biggest difference in the shortest time.

Couples sessions run 75 minutes rather than the standard 50; the longer session gives both partners real time to speak, to be heard clearly, and to walk out with something concrete to take into the week between appointments.

A Gottman-informed approach

Sessions draw on the Gottman Method, one of the most researched frameworks in couples work. The Gottman research follows real couples over decades and identifies the patterns that predict which relationships thrive, which drift, and which unravel. That evidence base sets the direction of the sessions.

The early work is diagnostic and honest. Together we map the recurring conflict patterns, the communication habits that get triggered under stress, the way trust has been built or eroded, and the friendships and rituals that hold the relationship together. This shared picture is what makes the change work possible.

From there, sessions become skill-focused: how to raise a hard topic without escalating it, how to repair after a rupture, how to accept influence from your partner without losing yourself. The tools are practical and rehearsed live in the room, not handed over as homework and hoped for.

What couples usually bring

Communication that keeps looping back to the same painful place. Conflict that starts small and lands somewhere neither partner meant to go. The slow drift of two people running parallel lives under the same roof. A rupture (an affair, a broken promise, a moment of contempt) that hasn't been repaired. The strain of parenting, careers, or in-laws pulling in different directions. A big life decision that has to be made together but keeps stalling.

There's also the couple who is functioning well enough on the surface but knows the connection has thinned out, and wants to reinvest before it hardens into distance. That's genuine, valuable work too.

The work is collaborative and active. It doesn't fix a relationship for you; it gives you a clearer view and better tools, and then asks both of you to use them.

The shape of a course of work

Most couples do a focused stretch of weekly or every-other-week sessions over three to nine months, with a longer intake session at the start. Some come for a defined piece of work (one specific conflict, one decision, one repair) and finish. Others stay longer as things unfold and open up.

Both partners must be Maryland residents, physically in Maryland during each session. Sessions run in English, in French, or in a natural mix of the two.

Is this a fit?

Is couples therapy at C-G Health a fit?

The work is collaborative and active. It doesn't fix a relationship for you; it gives you a clearer view and better tools, and then asks both of you to use them.

You'll likely get the most from this work if you are:

  • Both partners are willing to look honestly at their own contribution, not only the other person's
  • You want a structured, research-informed approach rather than open-ended venting
  • You are ready to try new patterns between sessions, not only in them

The work asks for:

  • A willingness to hear something uncomfortable and stay curious
  • Consistent attendance from both partners
  • The 24-hour cancellation window respected on both sides

If active abuse is happening in the relationship, couples therapy is not the right first step. A referral to the appropriate specialist care can go out instead.
